The original BitTorrent client and many of the more recent clients/utilities also support a DHT Network. The DHT is a distributed peer-to-peer network that is built on top of the BitTorrent protocol. The primary aim is to support the distribution and searching of torrent files. The DHT was first introduced in the BitTorrent protocol v0.8. The original DHT was centralised. A central DHT node owned and operated by the BitTorrent organization was used to distribute torrent files by creating new torrents based on any existing torrents, and each peer could connect to that node to download torrents. There was the possibility that a peer could be using its own copy of the DHT. This was a problem for users who had the intention of sharing files, because there was no way to know if the DHT node they were connected to was the one the original torrent uploader had chosen.
The original DHT model remained valid and usable until the BitTorrent protocol v0.8.2. In this release the original central DHT was replaced with a distributed model. The most significant changes in this release were:
The DHT is no longer centralised. Instead, the DHT is a peer-to-peer network. In order to participate in the DHT Network, a user's peer must remain connected to the DHT. This means that the user's peer can work with and depend on any other peer in the DHT. DHT nodes are distributed throughout the network.
The DHT now uses a Kademlia DHT to search for peers to connect to. Instead of a central node that provides a list of peers, Kademlia DHT nodes maintain a list of peers in a distributed manner.
It is no longer necessary for torrents to be uploaded to the central DHT. The decentralised DHT is used for discovery. Therefore, torrents can be shared without the need for uploading to a central DHT node.
Private sites are often the most effective way to get content onto the BitTorrent network. By keeping track of the torrents on a private BitTorrent server, a site owner can quickly prevent the replication of most copyrighted content. In this way, private BitTorrent sites are often a fast, effective way to distribute copyrighted content. This is because torrents are file transfers that are highly resistant to censorship, allowing users to circumvent ISP-level blocking of sites like The Pirate Bay. Torrent users often have little regard for the copyright of the content they download, which can lead to copyright infringement in some cases. This is why torrents are often used for the distribution of movies, software, and other copyrighted content.
In addition to public sites, there are also private sites that use BitTorrent to provide content. Private sites can be even more effective at keeping track of torrent requests and thus enforcing copyright and access limits on the amount of data that can be downloaded simultaneously. Private sites often do not have to worry about the distribution of copyrighted content. If a site is owned by a legitimate owner, there are many good reasons to site small. The site owner can enforce a small userbase and only provide a service to paid subscribers. Limited bandwidth and disk space are just a few of the other issues that affect private BitTorrent sites. If an individual is downloading large files from a private BitTorrent site, it usually means that someone paid for the content. 827ec27edc
