In the present article, the focus is on the development of Japanese as a second language, which requires a number of key learning components, such as vocabulary, kanji, syntax, and semantics (Biber and Leass 1997; Rogers and Santos 2004). In the cognitive domain, the development of syntax is probably the most important component of the language acquisition process (Ohnishi and Kondo 2010). In the sociocultural domain, second language acquisition can be seen as a multidimensional process with varying degrees of complexity (Sturm et al. 2008). The present research reviews a significant number of empirical studies to examine the most recent trends and developments, both in research and in teaching practices.
The article is organized as follows: The first section (“Cognitive Aspects of Second Language Japanese Development”) discusses the acquisition of vocabulary, kanji, and syntactic development. The second section (“Sociocultural Aspects of Second Language Japanese Development”) reviews evidence that Japanese is the native language and culture of Japanese and thus acquires L2 features in a different way than English. The third section (“Affective Aspects of Second Language Japanese Development”) examines motivated learners and their interplay with effective instructional approaches. The final section (“Pedagogical Aspects of Second Language Japanese Development”) reviews some of the ongoing issues in applied linguistics and SLA such as corpus-based studies, development of materials and resources, instructional design and classroom studies, technology-enhanced language learning, critical approaches to teaching Japanese and content-based instruction.
