Recently, SUSE Linux Enterprise Linux 7 introduced Preload, an automated preconfiguration feature that automatically installs and configures the latest required applications while the host system is booting up. Preload can also download applications for a later installation. It also detects the host system architecture, detects the system's hardware version and installs the appropriate kernel and updates the kernel and the boot loader. Preload is an easy way to preconfigure the Linux distribution for your specific system type and can be used to avoid reinstalling the operating system after an upgrade.
Each Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Oracle Enterprise Linux, and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server host offers a variety of server performance features. For example, Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Oracle Enterprise Linux include preconfigured and automated settings for memory, CPU, and networking performance.
Please note that resilvering a btrfs-RAID1+0 volume will not work with a btrfs-RAID1+1 volume, because this will mean a btrfs-RAID1+1 volume will not be available during the resilvering process. To ensure the resilvering works, you need to use raid10.
For details see https://btrfs.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Main_Page . The Copy-on-Write technology is not yet in production use in the Linux kernel, but we are now working on making the next step of innovation a reality. This means that the copy-on-write feature will be enabled by default in SUSE Linux Enterprise 12. SUSE Linux Enterprise 12 Alpha 2 will be our first chance to test this technology.
The Copy-on-Write technology already offers some of the features of a logical volume manager. For example, with SUSE Linux Enterprise 12 we can create a snapshot of a btrfs volume and then mount it as a separate volume. When writing data to the snapshot, the write operations are performed on the snapshot. When the write operations are finished, btrfs takes the last known good block and updates the current version of the file with the new contents. Thus SUSE Linux Enterprise 12 can do a rolling back of the filesystem to a previous version.
As you might have already heard, SUSE is also going open source. This is an exciting journey that allows the entire SUSE community to participate and be rewarded. The journey began with the launch of SUSE Linux Enterprise Open Build Service in September 2013, and now, we have also introduced SUSE Linux Enterprise OpenStack. One of the key elements of SUSE Linux Enterprise OpenStack is a fully compatible open source OpenStack distribution, OpenStack Folsom. 827ec27edc
